The Middle Path #11 – Resilience Through Time 💪
How the past has shaped us today 🏥
Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,
Welcome back to another edition of The Middle Path! We hope you’ve had a great week. This week, we explore the power of resilience—a cornerstone of Islamic history and spirituality. From the untold stories of determined Muslim women to reflections on how perseverance continues to shape modern Muslim life, let’s dive into an inspiring journey through time.
Did You Know? The Resilience of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid 🕌
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA) isn’t just the first believer in Islam—she’s also one of the greatest examples of strength, vision, and perseverance in the face of hardship. Born into wealth and privilege in pre-Islamic Arabia, Khadijah was known as "The Pure" (Al-Tahira) for her unwavering integrity. But what truly set her apart was her revolutionary business acumen and the pivotal role she played in supporting Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) during the most challenging times.
✨ A Businesswoman Ahead of Her Time: Long before the rise of the corporate world, Khadijah ran one of the most successful trading enterprises in Mecca. She shattered gender norms by employing men to work for her while maintaining her reputation for fairness and excellence. Among these employees was none other than Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), whom she later proposed to—an action considered bold and unconventional for her era.
✨ The First Believer: When the Prophet received the first revelation on Mount Hira, he returned shaken and overwhelmed. It was Khadijah who comforted him, affirming the truth of his prophethood. She didn’t just offer emotional support—she also provided material resources, investing her wealth in the nascent Muslim community when they were boycotted by the Quraysh.
✨ A Test of Resilience: Khadijah’s unwavering faith was tested during the infamous Boycott of the Hashim Clan, where she endured years of hunger and deprivation. Despite her declining health, her dedication to the Prophet’s mission never wavered. She passed away shortly after the boycott ended, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice and resilience.
🔗 Islamic Concept Highlight: Sabr (patience and perseverance). Khadijah exemplified this concept, demonstrating how steadfastness in faith and purpose can turn trials into triumphs.
Modern Reflections 🔎
What lessons can we draw from Khadijah’s life today? Her story offers timeless wisdom on how to remain steadfast in the face of adversity—whether in our personal lives, careers, or faith journeys.
💼 Women Entrepreneurs Rising: According to a 2018 report, the combined earnings would make Muslim women the world’s 16th richest country. The number of working women in Muslim-majority economies has increased by 50% in 15 years, reaching nearly 155 million. Like Khadijah, they’re redefining norms and building legacies of their own. From tech startups in Jakarta to sustainable fashion in London, these women embody resilience in every sense.
📈 Islamic Finance and Ethical Business: Modern Islamic principles of business ethics—honesty, fairness, and justice—mirror the practices Khadijah upheld. These values remain relevant in today’s world, where over $3 trillion in assets are managed in accordance with Islamic finance principles.
🤲 Navigating Challenges: Whether it's Islamophobia, career obstacles, or personal setbacks, many Muslims today draw strength from the stories of the Sahabah and early Muslim leaders. The Qur’an reminds us:
"Indeed, with hardship comes ease." (94:6)
This verse reinforces the idea that resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges but persevering through them."And whoever saves one life, it is as if they had saved all of mankind."
Meme of The Week
When you’ve been in traffic for 2 hours but you remember Khadijah (RA) practiced Sabr:

Highlight of The Week
🌟 Halimah Aden broke barriers in the fashion world as the first hijab-wearing model signed to a major agency. But her story isn’t just about glamour—it’s about resilience. Born in a Kenyan refugee camp, Halimah moved to the U.S. with her family at the age of seven. Growing up, she faced discrimination and stereotypes but remained unapologetically proud of her Somali-Muslim identity.
🏆 In 2016, she made history by competing in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant wearing a hijab and burkini, advancing to the semi-finals. Her success catapulted her onto global runways, where she redefined beauty standards and inspired countless young Muslim women.
🌍 Today, Halimah uses her platform to advocate for refugee rights and mental health awareness. In her words, "Being different is your strength—never your weakness."
This week, channel Khadijah’s resilience in your own life. Facing challenges at work? Feeling spiritually disconnected? Remember that perseverance is a cornerstone of faith.
Reflect on these words of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ):
"The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both."
Until next week, stay strong and stay inspired! 💪✨
