The Middle Path #4 - Sadaqah - The Power of Generosity
Ancient kindness that shapes modern lives
Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,
In this edition, we focus on Sadaqah, the act of voluntary charity in Islam. More than financial support, Sadaqah is any act of kindness given selflessly. From small gestures to major contributions, we’ll uncover how Sadaqah strengthens bonds, supports those in need, and reflects a timeless commitment to compassion.
🕌 1. Did you know?
In Islam, Sadaqah refers to voluntary charity given out of kindness, not just in wealth but in actions, words, and compassion. Beyond Zakat, the obligatory charity, Sadaqah represents a spiritual commitment to help those in need and contribute positively to the community. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that any good deed, even a smile, can be considered Sadaqah.
Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), the second caliph, exemplified Sadaqah through his leadership. Known for his deep empathy and dedication, Umar (RA) would often walk the streets at night, ensuring the poor were taken care of. His leadership model blended empathy and action, pioneering the idea that rulers and leaders should actively serve their communities.
Umar (RA) implemented the Bayt al-Mal, or “House of Wealth,” a public treasury used to collect and redistribute resources to the needy. This social welfare system was funded by Sadaqah, Zakat, and other charitable contributions, providing essential aid to widows, orphans, and the less fortunate.
The Bayt al-Mal continued for centuries, becoming one of the earliest known welfare systems, helping families thrive and communities flourish across the Islamic world. Umar (RA)’s approach to charity was also far-reaching. He extended support to non-Muslim communities, highlighting an inclusive model of Sadaqah, emphasizing that charity knows no bounds.
💖 2. UK Muslims donate at least 400% higher than the average
The research by global consultancy Blue State surveyed 1,000+ British Muslims, as well as a nationally representative group of 2,000+ British people, which included 86 Muslims. It found that the average self-reported amount donated in a year by Muslims in Britain was £708, compared with £165 when compared to a nationally representative sample.
“Those who spend their wealth in Allah’s way by night and by day, in secret and in public, have their reward with their Lord; they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.”
Whether given openly or quietly, Sadaqah brings blessings and eases the heart. For us Muslims, this verse reminds us that even in our busy lives, small, sincere acts of charity—supporting a friend, donating to local causes—bring peace and purpose, securing lasting rewards beyond this world.
The rise of digital platforms, like JustGiving, has made it easier for Muslims in Europe to give Sadaqah remotely, supporting causes across borders with just a click. These platforms have seen a notable increase in Ramadan donations, with over 40% of annual contributions occurring during the holy month.
"Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity."
Sadaqah’s principles of empathy, unity, and sustainability continue to shape community welfare initiatives, underscoring the timeless value of charity in Islam.
