Rediscovering empathy in a complex world
Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,
In this edition, we focus on Rahma, one of the core tenets of Islam. Rooted in both the Qur'an and Hadith, rahma is central to the way Muslims are encouraged to interact with others, reflecting God's own boundless compassion.
๐ 1. Did you know?
The name "Ar-Rahman" (The Most Merciful) is one of Allah's 99 names, and it highlights the importance of mercy and kindness in Islamic teaching.

"And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds."
Surah Al-Anbiya (Quran 21:107)
From a historical perspective, rahma shaped the way early Muslim communities built inclusive and compassionate societies. Whether it was establishing social welfare systems, caring for the poor, or treating prisoners with humanity, Muslims were taught to act with mercy toward all of creation. Hereโs how rahma influenced the early Islamic community:
Social Welfare: In the early days of Islam, leaders like Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab established welfare systems that provided food, money, and resources for the needy, embodying the principle of rahma by looking after the most vulnerable.
Forgiveness Over Retribution: The Prophet Muhammad (๏ทบ) forgave even his fiercest enemies after the conquest of Mecca, showing that compassion often triumphs over vengeance.
Animal Welfare: Compassion extended even to animals. One hadith narrates that a person who gave water to a thirsty dog was forgiven by Allah, illustrating that rahma has a place in all aspects of life.
Unity and Brotherhood: The early Muslim community established a sense of unity across diverse tribes, showing that mercy and compassion can bridge even the widest social and cultural divides.
๐2. Compassion in Todayโs World
"The Compassionate One has mercy on those who are merciful. If you show mercy to those who are on the earth, He Who is in the heaven will show mercy to you."
(Sunan Abu Dawood 4941)
In modern times, the importance of compassion in society is being re-examined. Studies show that acts of kindness and empathy positively impact both the giver and the receiver, creating stronger communities and improving mental well-being. Let's look at some powerful examples:
Mental Health Benefits: A 2022 study from Berkeleyโs Greater Good Science Center found that compassionate acts can reduce stress and anxiety levels by over 23%, helping to foster personal well-being and resilience.
Impact on Community: According to a 2021 survey, neighborhoods with active charity and community services report a 30% decrease in crime and violence, showing how compassion builds safer, more connected environments.
Corporate Culture: Companies that emphasize compassion and empathy report a 20% increase in employee satisfaction and productivity, according to a recent survey by Gallup. When rahma is embedded into work culture, it benefits everyone.
In the fast-paced, digitally connected world, showing compassion can feel like a challenge, but its impact is undeniable. From supporting mental health initiatives to community-driven charity work, living with rahma has tangible benefits for all.

When you try to show rahma to everyone, even if theyโre not in the mood for it...
๐คฒ 4. Highlight of the Week
Zahra Lari, a figure skater from the United Arab Emirates, broke barriers when she became the first figure skater to compete internationally while wearing a hijab. In a sport where Muslim women were rarely represented, Zahraโs achievements on the ice have shattered stereotypes, inspiring a new generation of young women to pursue their dreams without compromising their identity. Her journey reflects the Islamic concept of tawakkul (trust in Allah), as she faced challenges with resilience, faith, and the belief that anything is possible with dedication and divine support.
Starting her career as a teenager, Zahra overcame cultural expectations and the rigorous demands of competitive figure skating. Despite facing criticism and financial hurdles, her family and community supported her dreams. Her dedication was rewarded when she became the UAEโs first figure skater to participate in international competitions, putting her country on the map in the world of winter sports. Her presence on the global stage challenges norms and inspires countless young Muslims to believe in the power of both faith and perseverance.

Zahraโs story is a powerful reminder that faith, resilience, and tawakkul can open doors to achievements that once seemed impossible. With every performance, she not only represents her sport but also the strength of those who hold firm to their values. Her achievements are proof that trust in Allah and commitment to oneโs goals can make even the most unlikely dreams come true.
