How Muslims Revolutionised Healthcare 🏥
Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,
Welcome back to another edition of The Middle Path! We hope you’ve had a great week. In this edition, we dive into the fascinating world of Islamic healthcare and its profound impact on medicine.
Centuries before modern healthcare systems, Muslim scholars laid the foundation for compassionate, innovative medical care. From pioneering public hospitals to surgical breakthroughs, their influence is still felt today.
Let’s explore how these historical contributions shape medicine in the modern world.
Did You Know? – Islamic Healthcare Innovations 🩺
Here’s how early Muslim thinkers reshaped healthcare:
Public Hospitals: The first true hospitals (Bimaristans) were built in Baghdad (805 CE) and offered free treatment to all. They included specialised wards for different illnesses and emphasised hygiene.
Surgical Pioneers: Al-Zahrawi 🔪, the "Father of Surgery," invented over 200 tools, some still used today. His Kitab al-Tasrif became a key medical reference in Europe for over 500 years.
Mental Health Care: Muslim physicians treated mental illnesses with compassion when stigma was rampant elsewhere. The Bimaristans included dedicated wards for mental health, a revolutionary practice for the time.
Women in Medicine: Rufaida Al-Aslamia 🧕 trained women in nursing and patient care, laying the groundwork for community-based healthcare.
Focus on Cleanliness: Muslim hospitals prioritised hygiene and sanitation, centuries ahead of germ theory.

Modern Reflections 🔎
These lessons continue to inspire healthcare advancements today:
Universal Healthcare: The Bimaristan model influenced the idea of equitable healthcare access, like today's NHS 🏥.
Mental Health Progress: Islamic teachings on holistic well-being inspire destigmatisation efforts. Organisations like Khalil Centre offer culturally informed therapy rooted in Islamic principles.
Surgical Practices: Modern surgery owes much to Al-Zahrawi’s designs. His innovations paved the way for safer, more effective procedures.
Ethical Care: Muslim scholars emphasised compassion and confidentiality—values still central to patient care today.
Global Impact: Islamic Relief and MedGlobal continue the tradition of providing healthcare to vulnerable populations, echoing the legacy of service and compassion.
📊 Fact: In 2023, Muslim-led humanitarian organisations supported healthcare for over 2 million people worldwide.
"And whoever saves one life, it is as if they had saved all of mankind."

Highlight of The Week
Simply Smashed: Fajr Knights Campaign
At Simply Smashed in London, they made the winter holiday season special for young Muslims with the Fajr Knights Campaign.
Kids got a stamp on their Fajr Knights card for each Fajr prayer they attend. Collect 10 stamps, and they earned a free meal! It's about building prayer habits and community pride.

The campaign aims to show young Muslims that their tradition is something to be proud of, providing a sense of community celebration during a time when they might feel left out. The masjid is where they'll feel the spiritual connection, and Simply Smashed is where they're rewarded and their efforts are celebrated.
Be sure to check them out on Instagram too, a burger joint with a 4.9 star rating with over 2000 Google reviews… Smashed it!
And that’s that! We hope this short 5-8 minute newsletter (every Jummah) will help you become more knowledgeable about current worldly affairs with a snippet of Islamic history, whilst giving out a burst of Muslim-positive energy.
