The Middle Path #9 - Tawakkul:"Trust in Action" 🌟

Building Faith Through Historical Insight

Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,

Welcome to the 8th edition of The Middle Path, your weekly guide to all things Muslim-related across history, tech, business, and life. This week, we’re taking a look at the concept of Tawakkul - Reliance on Allah.

The history of Islam full of too many great examples of Tawakkul being practiced that it would be impossible to do it justice in a brief newsletter but we hope to share a few examples that can inspire you to read more.

1. Did You Know? The Concept of Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah)

Tawakkul means placing unwavering trust in Allah while making efforts toward achieving your goals. It’s a harmonious balance of personal action and divine reliance, a concept deeply ingrained in Islamic tradition and practice.

"And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose."

(Surah At-Talaq: 65:3) - Sahih International Translation

It’s important to recognise 4 things when it comes to Reliance upon Allah:

  1. Allah does not burden a soul with more than they can bear (Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286)

  2. The righteous are put to test to a greater degree as a means of expiation of sin and a greater reward

  3. A good life is promised to the one who practices Tawakkul as the true life is the life of the heart along with a true sense of joy and peace (Tafseer at-Tabari (17/291-292))

  4. Tawakkul does not imply passivity, but it means putting effort in and then placing hope and reliance in Allah

Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, which people are tested most severely?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “They are the prophets, then the next best, then the next best. A man is put to trial according to his religion. If he is firm in his religion, his trials will be more severe. If he is weak in his religion, he is put to trial according to his strength in religion. The servant will continue to be put to trial until he is left walking upon the earth without any sin.”

Sunan al-TirmidhiĚ„ 2398 (Sahih according to Al-Albani)
  • Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and Hajar's Trust in Allah: When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) left his wife Hajar and their infant son Isma'il in the barren desert of Mecca, Hajar's unwavering trust in Allah was evident. She asked Ibrahim if Allah had commanded this, and upon his affirmation, she responded, "Then He will not neglect us." Her reliance was rewarded with the miraculous spring of Zamzam.

  • Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Migration (Hijrah) with Abu Bakr: During their escape from Mecca to Medina, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companion Abu Bakr took refuge in the Cave of Thawr. When their pursuers came close, Abu Bakr expressed concern, but the Prophet reassured him, saying, "Do not be sad; indeed, Allah is with us." This profound trust in Allah ensured their safety.

  • Umar ibn Al-Khattab's Reliance During Calamity: During a severe drought in Madinah, Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab demonstrated tawakkul by fervently praying for rain, leading the community in seeking Allah's assistance, while simultaneously implementing measures to support the people, showcasing a balance between reliance on Allah and proactive effort.

  • Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal's Perseverance: Faced with imprisonment and torture during the Mihna (inquisition) for his stance on the nature of the Qur'an, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal's steadfastness and reliance on Allah became evident. He endured hardships without compromising his beliefs, embodying true tawakkul.

2. Linking Past to Present

The concept of Tawakkul continues to resonate in today’s fast-paced world, particularly when balancing ambition with spiritual grounding and modern .

The concept of Tawakkul—placing trust in Allah while putting in personal effort—remains deeply relevant today, guiding Muslims in various facets of life, including financial stability, mental health, and resilience during challenges.

  • Mental Well-being and Resilience:
Tawakkul serves as a cornerstone for managing anxiety and stress. A study published in the 2021 study titled "Coping with Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study of Academics in the Muslim World" highlighted that Muslims with a strong sense of reliance on Allah experienced lower levels of psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating the power of spiritual grounding in overcoming adversity.

  • Islamic Finance and Ethical Living:
Tawakkul underpins the success of the Islamic finance industry, which prioritizes ethical principles. Muslims actively choose Shariah-compliant investments and loans, trusting in Allah’s provision rather than engaging in usury (riba). The Islamic finance market is projected to grow to $4.94 trillion by 2025, reflecting its resonance with contemporary ethical concerns.

  • Community and Charity:
Tawakkul inspires Muslims to give generously in charity (sadaqah), trusting that Allah will provide for them in return. This principle drives community-building efforts, from disaster relief initiatives to local charity projects, emphasizing collective reliance on Allah for prosperity.

By incorporating Tawakkul, individuals can navigate uncertainties, maintain focus, and approach challenges with resilience, both spiritually and practically.
