The Middle Path #3 - Zuhd: Practicing Ascetism in the AI-driven World

Assalamu'alaikum / Hello,

📿 Islamic Concept: Zuhd (Asceticism)

Zuhd, or asceticism, refers to detachment from worldly pleasures and a focus on the hereafter. It is not about renouncing all material possessions but rather adopting an inner state of contentment and moderation, prioritizing the spiritual over the material.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged Zuhd when he said: "Richness is not having many possessions, but richness is being content with oneself." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6446)

In the Qur'an, Allah (SWT) advises: "But seek, with that [wealth] which Allah has bestowed upon you, the Home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of lawful enjoyment in this world..." (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:77).

These highlight the balance between engaging in the world without letting it dominate our hearts.

☀️ Zuhd in Today's World

In today’s fast-paced technology and finance sectors, the principles of Zuhd are crucial for young Muslims. Tech innovations, like AI, can create wealth and opportunities but also risk fueling consumerism, competitiveness, and over-reliance on material success.

Practicing Zuhd doesn't mean abandoning a career in tech or finance; rather, it’s about balancing ambition with spiritual detachment.

Muslim entrepreneurs, for instance, can build successful tech businesses while maintaining ethical standards, avoiding excessive greed, and using their profits for the betterment of society, as seen in Islamic fintech initiatives and charity-focused tech startups.

For example, consider the rise of Islamic banking technologies like Wahed Invest, which provides halal investment opportunities while ensuring that profits are earned in a halal way aligned with Islamic values.

These platforms show how we can engage with cutting-edge technology while upholding a sense of Zuhd, ensuring that we do not become slaves to wealth or status.

💻️ What is AI Over-Reliance?

AI over-reliance refers to an excessive dependence on artificial intelligence systems to make decisions, perform tasks, or control processes without adequate human oversight.

This can lead to several risks, including the automation of bias, loss of human skills, and ethical challenges in critical sectors like finance and healthcare.

Who does it affect? AI over-reliance impacts professionals in technology, finance, healthcare, and beyond. It particularly affects young professionals entering these fields, as they are often introduced to AI systems as indispensable tools.

Over-reliance can reduce their ability to critically analyze data, exercise creativity, and make ethical decisions.

📈 The Stats:

A Forbes article cited that 43% of businesses reported over-reliance on AI in decision-making processes, leading to gaps in ethical considerations and human judgment.

72% of AI professionals surveyed by the European Union reported concerns about bias in AI decision-making systems.

A research paper on AI overreliance by Migration Studies and showcased by the University of Exeter explained how future AI-overreliance could even lead to serious breaches of human rights.

These studies and stats underscore the risks AI-overreliance poses, especially when the technology is used without proper oversight or a human-centered approach.

↗️ Navigating AI Over-Reliance as a Young Muslim in Tech & Finance

As a Muslim aiming to build a career in any field, it’s important to engage with AI critically, without becoming overly dependent on it.

Here are four key steps to help you navigate this challenge:

1. Maintain Ethical Boundaries

Apply Islamic principles such as fairness, justice, and integrity when developing or working with AI technologies. Always ensure that the AI systems you build or rely on are aligned with Islamic ethics, avoiding biases and ensuring fairness in outcomes.

2. Combine AI with Human Insight

AI should enhance human decision-making, not replace it. Strive to develop a balanced approach where AI systems support your work, but critical thinking, creativity, and ethical decision-making remain your responsibility.

3. Continuous Learning

Stay updated with the latest in AI ethics, governance, and technology developments. Seek to upskill in areas that enhance your ability to work alongside AI rather than being displaced by it. Courses on AI ethics and Islamic finance in technology can give you an edge.

4. Consider Zuhd when using AI tools

In the spirit of Zuhd, keep your engagement with technology purpose-driven. Focus on how your work in AI or finance can contribute to positive change in society, rather than solely chasing career success or wealth. Seek balance between material pursuits and spiritual growth by setting clear intentions for your career goals.
